Why the hell would you buy and restore Trans Am with a 403 without doing an engine swap and deleting some of the smog crap?!
Why?

The guy wanted it original .

Because just about everyone in these "reality" shows are idiots trying to make a quick buck by cutting corners. I can't watch those desert car hooligans because it's horrible watching them struggle to make a profit on their car because they didn't want to invest enough in it. Case in point that GTO-clone they built for one of those boy-big high-quality auctions, they should have went the extra distance of turning that Tempest into a Ram-Air III GTO Judge clone instead of a base-model GTO. Then they bitch about barely making a profit.
Aka, Wheeler Dealers or nothing anymore, at least their stuff is enjoyable to watch.

WhWy would someone restore a Trans Am and fuck up the decals like that? Ruined it for me.

But... but... that's stupid! Most '77 and '78 SEs came with the better Pontiac 400. Grrr. Bandit is kerfuffled.

The guy who bought it clearly didn't care very much... he didn't even want a manual. They have no reason to spend extra money on a new engine unless they can get more money for it... oh wait they rebuilt an engine twice

Seriously! I want to win that contest, remove the decals, do an engine swap, then tweet them "this is how it should be done."

Tis what it tis~
Just take it and walk away

Eh, this show isn't too bad. It's certainly better than many of the "car shows" discovery has tried before.

Well, can't fault him for the auto. Finding a 4-speed car is so much harder than finding an auto. I wanted a manual but couldn't find one so I ended up with an auto.

I want to find an unmolested 1981 Z28. ?
Why not?
The 403, for a "smog motor", wasn't really horrible.
It's not like they tried building a 301 or 265, or worse.

Luckily for you Camaros never had Olds 403s... but they did have aweosme graphics!
It's a chevy so the engine swap options would be so much nicer and easier to complete than what I had to choose from.
The 403 was just... meh. It had less than 200hp, they have relatively weak blocks compared to 400s, and they are more expensive to build.

Agreed. I like monkeys, I like Trans Ams. I'll admit even considered hood designs for the Brat. That would not be it. Mothra, actually.

When a man walks up and says he'll give you a ridiculous amount of money for a car, you don't question why he wants it original. Time was also kind of a factor (not that the engine dying twice really helped)

Most of the aesthetic and mechanical choices on that show make me scratch my head.
